We welcome you to our Crichton Club website. We are proud of our organization, which began in 1920 as a lecture club for members of the central Ohio community and dedicated to hosting distinguished speakers representing a wide variety of intellectual pursuits. Named for James Crichton, the “Admirable Crichton,” a scholar and adventurer with accomplishments in the languages, arts and sciences, our club strives to maintain a balance in our membership between members of the local “town” and “gown” communities. Although past traditions, such as dancing to a live orchestra following the lectures, have been lost over time, our black tie evenings continue to attract an active membership and offer our members an opportunity to hear and to meet many of the important intellects of our new millennium. Please use our links to learn more about the history of our organization and to review the list of speakers who have joined us for more than eighty years.
Laurie Ann Hill, President 2008-2010 ************************************************************************
The first edition of the Crichton Club history in 1994 commemorated the club's 75th year. For this revised, website edition, the list of speakers and their topics has been updated to include those who have appeared through 2008. The information has been gleaned from Club minutes, letters, programs, and newspaper clippings housed in the ar-chives of the Ohio Historical Society. Past presidents and many current members have been most generous in sharing with me their recollections of past events. The list of all past speakers, the years of their appearance, and their topics would not have been possible without the help of Judy Driskell and Gilly Ludden. It is my hope that this brief history of the Crichton Club from its founding in 1919 through its 80th year of 2000 will give some pleasure, and perhaps some amusement, to current and future members.
